Dear Hiring Manager

Application for an Internship Position

My name is Raphael, and I am a third-year Communications and New Media major at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I am writing to express my interest as an intern at Saatchi & Saatchi as I would love to be a part of the team that produces creative and award-winning advertisements.

In the course of my study at NUS, I have sharpened both my writing and research skills from the modules that I have taken. I am currently on the communications management track, which focuses on public relations and advertising.

At my final year in the polytechnic, I led a team to run a successful event for SingPost, a client for a business planning module. We also produced collaterals, a stop-motion commercial, and a short instructional video, resulting in a distinction grade. I have also designed posters during my National Service term, where I was awarded 1st and 2nd place in a Safety Poster Design Competition.

Outside of academia, I had the experience of working as a freelance photographer, where I have acquired skills that will beneficial in this industry. My experience in this industry has given me the ability to fine-tune both my photography and image editing skills. You may view my work at www.raphaelgoh.com.

I have enclosed my resume and look forward to an interview to review my match for this position. I would love the chance to speak to you about my opportunities with your company. You may contact me at +65 9123 4567 or fakemail@mail.com.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully

Raphael Goh (Mr.)

  1. Hi Raphael

I think you have stated good and relevant points in your application letter that will interest the company since it is a global advertising agency.
For the 3rd paragraph, you mentioned that you led a team to run a successful event for SingPost, probably you can also include how many people there are in your team, which can show your capability and leadership skills.
I am not very sure if this point would be relevant, I thought it would be good to consider about how you can help the company to save costs to produce more award-winning advertisements or perhaps with your good photography, editing and creative skills.
As a freelance photographer, I guess you will be meeting many different people from all walks of life, probably u can mention through communication and networking, you can maintain productive working relationships with clients and staff.

    Cheers
    Selena

  2. hi raphel
the cover letter is clean cut and nicely put across. however you may want to highlight some TRAITS that you think will give you a vantage over other applicants? In addition you may want to discuss how you can contribute to the company.

  3. Hi Raphael!

I think your cover letter is very clean and concise! It was clear, and easy to read!

However, besides just mentioning your achievements from the SingPost event, perhaps you could highlight a little more about what you have learnt from your achievements, and how your acquired skill sets and talents may benefit the company? “Acquired skills that will beneficial in this industry” sounds a little too vague…

Also, I think the pop of bright orange in your resume was a very refreshing touch! Something different than the usual, black/white/grey format most people tend to use. (: Is there a particular reason for choosing orange though?
